Why Natural Rubber?

We LOVE natural rubber!

It all begins with the Hevea brasiliensis tree, which produces the milky latex used to make natural rubber. This remarkable, plant-derived material comes from a renewable source and has some pretty wonderful qualities.

Naturally soft, flexible and elastic, natural rubber has a warm, tactile feel that makes it lovely to touch. Yet it's also resilient and versatile, allowing us to create a wide range of thoughtfully designed products for everyday life.

We especially love how natural rubber can be shaped into simple, functional designs. Many of our HEVEA products feature a one-piece construction, with no unnecessary joints or crevices, making them easy to clean and care for.

From baby essentials to bath-time favourites and playful pet products, we choose natural rubber for its unique material properties and the possibilities it offers for thoughtful design.

Natural by origin. Thoughtful by design. So much to love!

Why do we choose Natural Rubber over silicone and plastic?

At HEVEA, we've always believed that the materials we choose matter. From the very beginning, natural rubber has been at the heart of our design philosophy, inspiring us to create beautiful, functional products for babies, families and pets.

So, why do we LOVE natural rubber?

It all starts with the Hevea brasiliensis tree. Natural rubber is made from the milky latex tapped from rubber trees, making it a plant-derived material from a renewable source. The latex can be harvested repeatedly from mature trees without cutting them down.

Unlike conventional plastics, which are generally made from fossil-based raw materials, natural rubber offers us a different starting point: a material that comes from trees.

But it's not just about where the material comes from. It's also about how it feels and what we can create with it!

Naturally soft, wonderfully flexible and beautifully tactile.

Natural rubber has a distinctive softness, elasticity and warm feel that we particularly love for our baby teethers, soothing toys and playful pet products. Its flexible texture makes it a lovely material for products designed to be held, squeezed and chewed, always in accordance with their intended use.

Another quality we appreciate is its versatility. Natural rubber allows us to create thoughtfully designed products, many with a seamless, one-piece construction that avoids unnecessary joints and hard-to-reach crevices, making them easy to clean and care for.

At HEVEA, we carefully consider the materials used in our products and work with our manufacturing partners to assess them against relevant product safety requirements. We believe in being transparent about what our products are made from and the testing that supports them.

For us, choosing natural rubber is about appreciating its plant-based origin, unique material properties and design possibilities.

Natural by origin. Thoughtful by design. Beautifully HEVEA.

Is Natural Rubber Latex? And if so, what does that mean?

Yes! Natural rubber is made from the milky latex sap tapped from the Hevea brasiliensis tree.

Natural latex contains naturally occurring proteins, some of which can cause allergic reactions in people with a latex allergy.

During the manufacturing process, natural rubber undergoes several processing and washing stages that can reduce the amount of residual latex proteins in the finished product.

However, natural rubber products may still contain traces of latex proteins.

If you or your child have a known or suspected natural rubber latex allergy, we recommend avoiding natural rubber products and seeking advice from a healthcare professional.

At HEVEA, we believe in being transparent about our materials so you can make informed choices for yourself and your family.

How do I know if I am having an allergic reaction to natural rubber?

Natural rubber latex contains naturally occurring proteins that may cause allergic reactions in some people.

Symptoms of a latex allergy can include:

  • Itching, redness or skin irritation
  • Skin rash or hives
  • Sneezing, a runny nose or watery eyes
  • Swelling of the lips, face or other affected areas

In more serious cases, allergic reactions may cause breathing difficulties, swelling of the throat or a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis.

If you or your child experience symptoms that may indicate an allergic reaction, stop using the product immediately and seek medical advice.

If symptoms include difficulty breathing, throat swelling or faintness, seek emergency medical assistance immediately.

If you or your child have a known or suspected natural rubber latex allergy, we recommend avoiding HEVEA natural rubber products.

At HEVEA, we believe in providing clear information about our materials so you can make informed choices for yourself and your family.

Can your natural rubber products change in colour? Are they still safe if so?

Yes! Natural rubber is a natural material, and you may notice changes in its colour or appearance over time.

Exposure to sunlight, heat, air and everyday use can affect the appearance of natural rubber, sometimes causing it to darken or change shade.

A change in colour alone does not necessarily mean that the product is damaged. However, it is important to check your HEVEA product regularly for signs of wear or deterioration.

If the rubber becomes sticky, brittle, cracked, unusually hard or shows other signs of deterioration, stop using the product and replace it.

To help care for your HEVEA natural rubber products, follow the product-specific cleaning and storage instructions. In general, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and excessive heat, and store products in a clean, dry place.

Natural materials may change over time regular inspection and proper care are important, especially for products used by babies and young children.

Is it normal for Natural Rubber products to have a smell?

Yes! Natural rubber has its own distinctive scent, which you may notice when you first unpack your HEVEA product.

Some people describe it as slightly sweet or reminiscent of vanilla. This scent comes from the natural rubber material and may become less noticeable over time.

As with any product, it's important to follow the care and cleaning instructions provided on the packaging before first use.

If your HEVEA product has an unusually strong or unpleasant odour, or if you notice other unexpected changes in the material, please contact us before using it.

Natural rubber has its own character — and its scent is simply one of the things you may notice - we love this too.

How do I know when it's time to replace my Natural Rubber product?

Natural rubber is a flexible material, but like all materials, it can show signs of wear and ageing over time.

To help keep your HEVEA products in good condition, we recommend checking them regularly, especially products used by babies and young children.

It's time to stop using and replace your product if you notice:

  • Cracks, tears or other visible damage
  • A sticky or flaky surface
  • Changes in flexibility, such as becoming unusually hard or brittle
  • Weakness, deterioration or other changes in the material that could affect its performance

You may also notice that natural rubber changes colour or darkens over time, particularly when exposed to sunlight, heat or everyday use. A colour change alone does not necessarily mean the product is damaged, but it's important to check for other signs of deterioration.

When in doubt, it's always best to stop using the product and replace it.

When disposing of your HEVEA product, follow your local waste-sorting guidelines. Do not place it in food-waste or compost collections unless specifically accepted by your local waste authority.

For pacifiers, feeding teats and other baby products, always follow the product-specific inspection, care and replacement instructions provided on the packaging ( 6-8 weeks replacement).

How should I dispose of my HEVEA natural rubber product?

When your HEVEA natural rubber product reaches the end of its usable life, it's important to dispose of it responsibly.

Natural rubber is a plant-derived material, but this does not automatically mean that finished natural rubber products are suitable for home composting or food-waste collection.

We recommend following your local waste-sorting guidelines when disposing of your HEVEA product.

Unless your local waste authority specifically accepts the product, please do not place it in food-waste or compost collections.

Thoughtful choices matter throughout a product's life  including how we care for it and dispose of it.
